Volunteering at Habitat for Humanity

We give back to the community; where we help those in need and provide our members with the opportunity to make a difference.

Habitat for Humanity is a non for profit organization helping families realize their dreams of home ownership. By supporting Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County, ASCE @FAU helps provide decent, safe, affordable housing to hard working families who may not otherwise have the opportunity to own homes. Additionally, the support strengthens the community as a whole. Our chapter has worked with many families through out the years while working with Habitat for Humanity, here are some of quick summaries of what we accomplished:

Boynton Beach Family
On Saturday August 12th students from ASCE @ FAU helped a Boynton Beach family build their dream! Students painted the garage, installed doors throughout the home, caulked bathrooms, and cleaned so the home was ready for the new family to move in.
Barry–McGowan Family

On Friday June 26 students from ASCE @ FAU helped the Barry–McGowan family build their dream! We worked from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM, our work involved installing drywall in the upstairs bedrooms. We were able to see first hand how a design turns into an actual structure. We were able to see the structural supports of the home through the floorboards and even experienced a design flaw where a outside wall did not align with an interior wall because the thickness of the drywall and supporting wood 2x4's were not taken into account.

Bush Family

On Saturday October 29th a group of 18 students from ASCE @ FAU helped the Bush family build their dream! We worked from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM, our work involved landscaping the surroundings of Bush’s new home! We were able to give a breath-taking scene with the incorporation of fauna creating a beautiful environment within the landscape.

Harris Family
On Friday September 23rd students from ASCE @ FAU helped the Harris family build their dream! We worked from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM, our work involved roof sheeting and the installation of fascia board, this one being one of the most important tasks throughout the build process.

Working with Habitat for Humanity is always a great experience and the students of the American Society of Civil Engineers look forward to our next Habitat for Humanity build!
